    Monday 19 November 2007

President Bush's homeland security adviser Fran Townsend resigned Monday, becoming the latest top administration official to leave the White House.

Bush heaped praise on Townsend, who held the position for more than four years.

"Fran has always provided wise counsel on how to best protect the American people from the threat of terrorism," the president stated. "She has been a steady leader in the effort to prevent and disrupt attacks and to better respond to natural disasters."

Townsend has been one of the more visible White House officials, often briefing the media on homeland security issues or appearing on television to lay out Bush's policies.

"She has played an integral role in the formation of the key strategies and policies my Administration has used to combat terror and protect Americans," Bush said, adding, "We are safer today because of her leadership."
