Phoenix - US immigration agents have arrested 595 people at a Mississippi factory in what was the largest workplace enforcement raid in the United States to date, an immigration official said on Tuesday.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Barbara Gonzalez said federal agents arrested the workers in a raid at the Howard Industries Inc. factory in Laurel, Miss, on Monday.

"This is the largest targeted workplace enforcement operation we have carried out in the United States to date," Gonzalez told Reuters by telephone.

The swoop at the plant, which makes electrical equipment including transformers, was part of an ongoing investigation into identity theft and fraudulent use of Social Security and for illegal immigrants.

The nationalities of the detainees was not immediately available.

Gonzalez said 475 detainees were transferred to an ICE detention facility in Jena, Louisiana, while nine unaccompanied minors - eight males and one female - were placed in the custody of the office of refugee resettlement.

A further 106 people were released based on "humanitarian concerns," Gonzalez said.

Immigration, particularly what do about some 12 million illegal immigrants living in the shadows in the United States, is a divisive issue in this election year.

Last year, Republicans in the U.S. Senate killed an immigration overhaul that would have offered many workers in the U.S. illegally a path to citizenship.

The measure was supported by both Republican presumptive nominee John McCain and Democrat rival Barack Obama.

Since its failure, immigration authorities have stepped up workplace enforcement raids, which have nabbed more than 4,000 people nationally since October 1 last year.

Previously the largest single immigration sweep was conducted at Agriprocessors Inc, a kosher meat plant in Postville, Iowa, which arrested 390 people in May.

We can boycott meat packers

We can boycott meat packers like Tyson and Hebrew who won't hire American citizens to work but instead bring in illegals for slave labor wages. I've been boycotting those 2 for years. Tyson fired all its Americans; I don't think Hebrew ever hired any...and if one lived close enough, one could picket. We can also write to our congress persons, both state and federal but it probably won't do any good as long as they can get money from the corporations or corporate lobbyists.

The workers clapped because

The workers clapped because the native born Americans were being discriminated against by the company. The illegals were being given the supervisor positions and the overtime. It wa an attempt to break the union and drive out the Americans ,so another rich person could say Americans are lazy and don't want to work-it goes on everywhere capitalist exploitation.Do some research before you critisize.I applaud also .

Instead of hauling out the

Instead of hauling out the illegals, why don't the feds shut down the plant and haul away the employers? That would send a much better message...to all.

That many undocumented

That many undocumented workers indicates that the companies were complicit in bringing them in. So Why isn't management, the boards and the CEO being arrested?

Trying to close a border

Trying to close a border does not work. An example seen a lot recently, the Great Wall of China did not keep the invaders out (see Great Wall of China: From History to Myth by Waldron). The Berlin Wall fell. A US border wall will fail. The US needs to develop a humane to deal with immigrates - you are not going to stop them from coming.

I can't believe there were

I can't believe there were people clapping as these people were being arrested. That's absolutely sick. I'm not in favor of illegal immigration but to cheer at others misfortune is wrong. First we need to effectively close the borders and then deal humanely with those already here.

AND they pay taxes to the

AND they pay taxes to the government that deports them. Most are delusional to think that illegals working in these plants do not pay taxes. They paid for their own detection and "operation" by ice to remove them. How? Their payroll taxes used to fund Social Security, Medicaid/Medicare and all the other things that go with even renting and apartment (city taxes are paid by the landlord which feeds into the school system, etc). Reform *is* necessary. A Canadian Immigration Plan is worked out with individual employers; immigrants are brought in to fill the underfed labor pool and arrive with Landed Immigrant status AS LONG AS THEY CONTINUE TO WORK FOR THAT EMPLOYER, IF NOT? The company is responsible to Immigration and reports that they are no longer in the employ and have either departed the country, to wit the company supplies documentation (for fear of losing their ability to bring in much needed workers), as well as Immigration Canada being notified of their employment termination. This fills the labor pool and keeps the employer responsible for the immigrants it brings in to the government, OR they end up with no labor and no production and no profit.

Why take the factories to

Why take the factories to China when you can hire illegals here? This has been going on since Bush took office and they're just now enforcing the LAW to make a big show. The company, Mills Manufacturing that was raided in western NC has a US Government DoD contract to make parachutes used by US forces. 80% of the production workers were illegals. They probably won the contracting by low bidding the competition knowing they were using illegals and paying NO benefits and lower wages. This is just the tip of the iceberg. The contracting officer should either terminate the contract for fraud or make them produce using US citizens at no additional cost to the government - same price structure proposed.
