San Francisco - There is new evidence suggesting the Veteran's Administration is covering-up sub-standard mental health care given to vets. There's evidence a federal judge in San Francisco accepted on Tuesday, even though the case has already been tried.

The email was written in March by Norma Perez, Ph.D., a V.A. psychologist who coordinates post-traumatic stress disorder cases.

She wrote, "Given that we are having more and more compensation-seeking veterans, I'd like to suggest that you refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out. Consider a diagnosis of adjustment disorder."

The email was discovered by accident through a Freedom of Information request by a veterans group.

"It is a very damning email. Cut off the money, disguise them with adjustment disorders so they don't get V.A. benefits," said Gordon Erspamer, a Veterans Groups' Lawyer.

Attorneys for Veteran's groups suing the V.A. say the email supports their case that the dept has failed to diagnose and treat PTSD and other mental health problems.

Their lawsuit asks the court to force the V.A. to treat veterans who show signs of PTSD and are at risk of suicide.

The V.A. says the email's author admits it was poorly worded and has no bearing on the lawsuit.

"I think she made it clear she had mistakes. The secretary has disciplined her and also said she doesn't reflect any V.A. policies," said Kerri Childress, a Veterans Administration spokesperson.

This is the second email that the veterans say the V.A. has tried to conceal from the public.

The first surfaced during the trial that ended last month. The V.A.'s Mental Health Director Dr. Ira Katz, M.D. wrote that there were 1,000 suicide attempts a month among veterans.

Katz said, "Is this something we should address ourselves in some sort of release before someone stumbles on it?"

"The first one says lets cover the 1,000 suicide attempts per month and the second one says lets deny benefits," said Sid Wolinsky, a Veterans Groups' Lawyer.

Federal Judge Samuel Conti granted the veterans groups request to enter the email as evidence even though the non-jury trial ended last month. He's expected to rule on the lawsuit any day now.

This is a heinous and an unbelievable travesty to put on our veterans. I am a Naval veteran (from the late 50's) and a retired psychotherapist. For me to read that another therapist sent an e-mail recommending using adjustment disorder instead of the real diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a shock that makes me feel such outrage!!! This highly unethical therapist should have her license to practice revoked. She's a danger to patients. My God!!! This is a real crime against our veterans and must be corrected.

This Veteran's

This Veteran's Administration is insane. Trying to brush the current wave of PTSD under the carpet is shameful. I can tell you from personal experience that the people who are presently asking for treatment are only the tip of the iceberg. Treating them fairly and with compassion will go a long way toward keeping those of us who made the mistake of choosing to suffer in silence, sane. Every time I hear another report of one of these petty bureaucrats denying the existence of, or treatment for PTSD, I get a bit sicker. These denials damage me. Let me tell you the truth about PTSD. PTSD is something you never really recover from. You get to wander through life in a state of surreal isolation. Some of the time you connect. Some of the time you don't. Any time there is extreme conflict in your vicinity or on the tube you risk a relapse. The longer the conflict lasts the surer it is that you will relapse. Stability doesn't come with the territory . . .

Way to go, VA! Cover up your

Way to go, VA! Cover up your lies with more lies!! It' s not like it's obvious that you're lying, or anything!! We believe you and fully support you in your efforts to avoid caring for our veterans, who surely don't deserve it anyway!! But seriously, though, these are the things that come to my mind when I hear people like McCain equate keeping the war going with "supporting the troops" or "keeping our promise to the troops" How about let's bring them all home and take really good, really honestly good care of them, heal their wounds both psychological and physical? Would that count as supporting the troops?

I just noticed that I hadn't

I just noticed that I hadn't added my name to my earlier posting, "This Veteran's Administration is insane."
