What Does "Feminists for Life" Tell Us About Palin?

What a public relations boon for any organization. The Feminists for Life home page currently reads: "FFL Member nominated for Vice President of the United States ... According to the Anchorage Daily News published August 6, 2006, 'Palin said last month that no woman should have to choose between her career, education, and her child - she's a member [since 2006] of a pro-woman but anti-abortion group called Feminists for Life ... [Palin stated] I believe in the strength and power of women, and the potential of every human life.'"

What does this affiliation say about Palin? What is Feminists for Life? FFL's slogan is "Refuse to Choose: Women Deserve Better than Abortion." Co-opting genuine woman-focused language and values, and wrapping it in a false blanket of "woman-centered solutions" and alleged loving concern for women, FFL cleverly uses a "pro-woman, pro-life philosophy" and completely manipulates the feminist terminology of empowerment. Their web site speaks out on numerous issues of concern to women, such as violence against women, honor killings, coercive sterilization, literacy, child care, sex trafficking, and female genital mutilation. They support deceptive anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers as real solutions for women, with the centerpiece of their work being that abortion is exploitive, coercive, and always wrong and harmful, for any and all women everywhere, in every circumstance.

In 2002, while running for the office of lieutenant governor in Alaska, Palin wrote to the Alaska Right to Life Board and stated that she was as "pro-life as any candidate can be" and has "adamantly supported our cause since I first understood, as a child, the atrocity of abortion." She does not view rape and incest to be valid exceptions to her stance; the only exception that she supports is if the life of the woman is in danger. How very noble of the governor to care about women so deeply.

Of course, she shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe vs. Wade (although she has never flip-flopped on the issue, as he has) and she is a dangerous ideologue. She is also against gay marriage.

When discussing a ballot measure that would deny benefits to gay couples, she stated: "I believe that honoring the family structure is that important," obviously oblivious to the fact that her definition of family is incredibly narrow and that the diversity of all types of families should be celebrated. She is a self-described hockey mom, mother of five, is in favor of capital punishment, does not believe that global warming is human-made, is a long-time member of the National Rifle Association, and supports the teaching of both creationism and evolution in public schools. As would be expected, Sarah Palin also opposes medically accurate sexuality education programs and stated in 2006 that "she would fund [only] 'abstinence-until-marriage' education" (Juneau Empire, 9/20/06).

This belief now presumably has had an enormous impact on Palin's family per an announcement on Labor Day that her 17-year-old daughter Bristol is five months pregnant, will keep the child, and marry the father. The Palins further stated: "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media [to] respect our daughter and Levi's privacy, as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

I could not agree more that these are extraordinarily private and personal family issues that should not destroy the life and future of Bristol or her fiancé. This family needs to be left alone as they work through the impact of Bristol's pregnancy and how this will change her life. How good-and right- it is that Bristol has the support and love of her family and that Bristol made the decision on her own to keep her baby, as did her 44 year-old-mom with all five of her children. No one should judge this family, Bristol's sexual activity, or pregnancy, as this is what true choice is all about. Parenting is one of the most challenging jobs in the world, and motherhood is an aspect of Palin's résumé that prepares her for leadership (although not to be the vice-presidential nominee). I cannot help but wonder that if Bristol and her boyfriend had been exposed to a different type of discussion around sexual activity-medically accurate sexuality education - could this pregnancy have been avoided?

Bristol has made her choice - and all choices regarding unintended pregnancy need to be respected, honored, and supported, whatever they are. Women are moral and ethical decision-makers and they know when then are ready-or not- to bring a new life into this world. But that is not the stance of Sarah Palin. As a staunch religious conservative specifically selected to mobilize the religious right and close the gender gap-John McCain is trailing Barack Obama by 12 points among women, according to Emily's List - Sarah Palin is completely out of touch with the realities of the lives of women and families. As quoted in the August 31st Women's E-News, Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood of America, declared: "The last thing women need is a president - and a vice-president who are prepared to turn back the clock and repeal the protections of Roe vs. Wade." Yes, that is a frightening and chilling thought.

"Can You Cross Out 'Hillary" and Write in 'Sarah'?" queries Kate Zernike in Sunday's New York Times. For me, the answer is clear and transparent. NO. We undeniably need to keep fighting racism, sexism, homophobia, and a vast array of inequalities in the US. We absolutely need more diversity and far many more smart, perceptive, and well-informed women in leadership roles for the good of the country and the world. But not this anti-choice, pro-gun, and inexperienced woman governor.

To the Republicans I say - do not ever pander to me and don't you dare insult my intelligence. Do not give us a candidate who opposes everything that enhances the lives, health, and opportunities for women and children. But that is what you just did and shame on you.

I highly doubt she had the

I highly doubt she had the choice. Her mother would likely have disowned her if she chose "incorrectly".

What is curious to me is

What is curious to me is that many pro life advocates are only pro life until the baby is born. Then they want the individual to have few rights, grow up and go off to war to kill and maim. I call that pro death. So they should rename their movement Pro Life til Born, then Pro Death.

Pro Life? Must save the

Pro Life? Must save the earth. More people are an imminent problem. How much do you toss out every week, eat transported food, drive, consume, flush?

If a preventive war is

If a preventive war is ethical - as Bush and the religious right tell us then, clearly, abortion as pre-emptive - is ethical as well If a "Christian" is comfortable violating the ten commandments [thou shall not kill] because the death penalty is a deterrent to future murders, and in the public good then it follows - absolutely that killing a potential human being who being raised unwanted in a struggling home has an enormous potential to become criminal abortion is a preemptive act of violence in the public good like capital punishment and pre-emptive war if you support capital punishment then by the argument above you have no moral, ethical or even intellectual grounds for opposing abortion secondly, i oppose state initiated murder but abortion is NOT state initiated it's a personal not a public decision once again the right got confused

To a rational mind, having a

To a rational mind, having a "pro-life" perspective contradicts the endorsement of capital punishment, gun ownership and militarism - the thing is that we're not dealing with rational minds here. What we're dealing with are human beings who are so emotionally vacant that they need to rely on ridiculously outdated "laws" and superstitions because the development of individual moral fortitude is far too much of a task for them. It would mean having to think, and act, for themselves. It would mean having to embrace a true freedom of the spirit. And that, I suppose, would mean having to give up all self-contradictory behavior. The very Books of the Judeo-Christian cult are contradictory, with a murderous-but-loving God; a God who is just as vengeful, jealous and vain as us mortals. From a more current psychological perspective, it's easy for us to say that this was a God that we projected; a God that we invented to help keep order, to prevent anarchy and evolution - but "belief" still trumps psychological perspective because Books I and II both instill great fear should the believer abandon them. God will get you and consign your sorry butt to eternal damnation should you drop the cult and drift off on your own. it's an ungodly God, indeed, a God who is outside, impossible to reach - but if you are void of a personal intrinsic order and meaning, then you have no choice but to turn to the outside to find it. If there's nothing inside, the outside becomes the only reality. The God of Book I is an outside God, a separate God; Book II carries on the tradition but gives us a liaison, who is also pretty distant, especially in 2008. The result of holding up these misbegotten creatures of the human imagination as gods has crippled the advance of western societies more than anything else and remains a mental monument to the density of our skulls. Palin is no more than another sad representative of this hugely dysfunctional cult and the contradictions it suffers. Suffice it to say, I feel that we all need to look inside for the answers here.

Why is it OK to poison

Why is it OK to poison babies in the womb? It is NOT OK-- and it is time for anti- abortion activists to understand that fact. The pollution form coal fired power plants is making children have ADD- HADD- Low IQ's ---deformities---behavorial problems---deaths/miscarriages Neither abortion or poisoning is OK. Tiem to realize that.

I think the concept of an

I think the concept of an abortion is just murder !but I can see if the life of the mother is in danger then it is a medical necessity. If I have cancer in my testes will I be denided treatment as a right to life?should idiot law makers decided ? To me it should be me,my doctor , pastors, decision not some jerk in D.C. Give people a reason to want to raise the baby.Laws do not stop people they just make people criminals for doing it.

Sarah Palin is a very fair

Sarah Palin is a very fair example of the fact that women can be just as effective at bullying as men. How easy it is for her to deal with another baby in her rich household, with all the help she needs. She's clueless about women who don't have her resources and she doesn't care. And if that isn't bad enough, she's an ardent believer in capital punishment, a staunch member of the NRA, and would force a woman to have a child caused by rape or incest. Pro-life? I'd laugh if I didn't feel like throwing up.

There was a great Lenny

There was a great Lenny Bruce routine where Moses asks Jesus-angrily-"What have you done to my book?" I can imagine the same happening if Lincoln-no great fan of the bible-returned. "What have you done to my party." The fact that the religious right with such stalwarts as Reed, Robertson, and the late Jerry Falwell in leadership roles enjoys so much influence is way beyond troubling. For example: Reed, who in a moment of political disgrace over plagiarism conveniently found Jesus -and forgiveness in a phone booth. Falwell, who believed 9-11 was God's way of telling us that we were too soft on gays. Robertson who believes that the crime problem can be solved by "faith police." Republicans have made a Faustian pact with the devil-this time he sports wings and plucks a harp-simply to satisfy their greed for things such as corporate welfare and tax breaks. In doing so they have turned the party of Lincoln into something closer to the party of George Lincoln Rockwell. Let us cast out these false prophets. No matter what they say, God is not a childish combination of Santa Claus and J. Edgar Hoover, and they don't speak in the Lord's name.

I continue to be amazed at

I continue to be amazed at the huge number of people who are so-called "pro-life" but also in favor of capital punishment!

waht about... @ 01:24 -- to

waht about... @ 01:24 -- to answer your last question first, I've heard Republicans accuse Dems of having "situational ethics"... which seems to sum up this situation quite well, wouldn't you say? So, now it's don't do as my own daughter did, do as I tell you to do, even though I don't know you, don't know your personal situation, and don't know your own religious beliefs, much less your beliefs on when life actually begins... do it because MY religion tells ME to. I know many who read here are considering support of a 3rd party candidate. To you, I say, please, do NOT let your disapproval of BOTH major parties keep you from voting for Obama. PLEASE, do NOT let the far right gain control of the executive branch again, with all it's weight on the direction of the courts. If the Republicans win, we're doomed to ever worse tragedy, greater loss of freedom, greater loss of jobs, homes, health care... need i go on? ~~ Lane Baldwin -- alifewithspirit.blogspot.com

I wonder what her daughter's

I wonder what her daughter's pregnancy tells us about Palin's strict, no-sex-education policy. I would say that here in the real world, it has failed miserably. I have a niece that got pregnant by the first guy she had relations with; they got married in a hurry (her mom didn't even know), and now they are scraping by, are not going to finish college any time soon, and because of that, will probably stay in dead-end jobs. She, and her new husband, were raised on the same kind of far-right, hard-line, Bible-thumping agenda that Ms. Palin is apparently advocating for all. No abortions, no sex education, no discussion. What a pity that my niece didn't come from a well-off family. Money sure can cover for a lot of ignorance. (Look at W.)

what about the abstinance

what about the abstinance thing? She home schools her daughter teaching her abstinance. So how does this show this worked? Is the definition now that premarital sex with teens, taught not to use condoms, ok if your parents can afford to help? What do they call this amorphous sort of morality?

Palin is anti -abortion, but

Palin is anti -abortion, but implies that her daughter chose to keep the baby. What if she didn't have a loving, supportive and wealthy family, and a partner who will share the responsibility of parenting, and what if she didn't have a choice?
