What Patriotism Is, and Is Not

On Monday, Senator Barack Obama discussed American history, his own patriotism, and the need for service and sacrifice.

At the beginning of the week, a friend sent me a scurrilous, anonymous e-mail attacking Barack Obama that has been circulating around her elderly cousin's senior living community in New Jersey. Headlined "Something to Think About," it lists 13 acts of assassination, kidnapping, war and terrorism, all of which, it notes, were committed "by Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40." After several other claims, including a bogus citation from the Book of Revelation, the e-mail concludes, semi-literately, "For the award winning Act of Stupidity Now ... the People of America want to elect, to the most Powerful position on the face of the Planet - The Presidency of the United States of America to A Muslim Male Between the ages of 17 and 40? Have the American People completely lost their Minds, or just their power of reason? I'm sorry but I refuse to take a chance on the 'unknown' candidate Obama."

To point out the obvious errors, that Barack Obama's a Christian, not Muslim, and that he's 46, not "between the ages of 17 and 40," feels a bit lame, like damning with faint fact-checking. Let's call this appalling missive what it is - bigoted, hysterical and more than a little nuts. Unless, of course, it comes from the hands not of a mere delusional crank, but one of those beneath-the-radar smear forces that we all know are out there, ratcheting into higher and higher gear as November gets closer.

E-mails such as the one my friend passed along are insidious, appealing to our deepest fears and prejudices. A front-page story in Monday's Washington Post profiled retired worker Jim Peterman of Findlay, Ohio. He's a decent guy who "believes a smart vote is an American's greatest responsibility," the Post's Eli Salsow wrote. "Which is why his confusion about Barack Obama continues to eat at him ...

"Does he trust a local newspaper article that details Obama's Christian faith? Or his friend Leroy Pollard, a devoted family man so convinced Obama is a radical Muslim that he threatened to stop talking to his daughter when he heard she might vote for him?

"'I'll admit that I probably don't follow all of the election news like maybe I should,' Peterman said. 'I haven't read his books or studied up more than a little bit. But it's hard to ignore what you hear when everybody you know is saying it. These are good people, smart people, so can they really all be wrong?'"

So it goes across the nation. Chances are, many of the perpetrators of this nonsense think they're being patriots, saving us from Obama and ourselves. And goodness knows, there's a long history of this kind of guttersnipery in American politics. As Obama pointed out in his Monday speech on the nature of patriotism, "Thomas Jefferson was accused by the Federalists of selling out to the French. The anti-Federalists were just as convinced that John Adams was in cahoots with the British and intent on restoring monarchal rule ... the use of patriotism as a political sword or a political shield is as old as the Republic."

Details of Obama's speech got buried in the wake of General Wesley Clark's politically lunkheaded comment about John McCain that, "I don't think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president." But over the Fourth of July weekend, it might be appropriate and enlightening to take a few minutes to read or watch the whole thing.

It's a good speech. The senator talks about American history and his own patriotism, about the need for service and sacrifice. "For those who have fought under the flag of this nation," he said, "for the young veterans I meet when I visit Walter Reed; for those like John McCain who have endured physical torment in service to our country - no further proof of such sacrifice is necessary. And let me also add that no one should ever devalue that service, especially for the sake of a political campaign, and that goes for supporters on both sides."

And this: "I believe those who attack America's flaws without acknowledging the singular greatness of our ideals, and their proven capacity to inspire a better world, do not truly understand America.... But when our laws, our leaders or our government are out of alignment with our ideals, then the dissent of ordinary Americans may prove to be one of the truest expressions of patriotism."

Which brings me to what I think was an unusual and especially fine expression of American patriotism. It's the June 19 closing argument of Air Force Reserve Maj. David J.R. Frakt, arguing for the dismissal of charges against Mohammed Jawad, a young detainee at Guantanamo, charged with throwing a hand grenade that wounded two GI's and their interpreter in Afghanistan. Frakt argued that Jawad should be released because sleep deprivation - two weeks' worth - was used to torture him. You can read it on the web site of the ACLU.

Frakt stood before the military commission upholding the inviolability of the American principle of due process, even for an alleged enemy of the United States. "Under the Constitution all men are created equal, and all are entitled to be treated with dignity," he said. "No one is 'undeserving' of humane treatment. It is an unmistakable lesson of history that when one group of people starts to see another group of people as 'other' or as 'different,' as 'undeserving,' as 'inferior,' ill treatment inevitably follows ...

"After six and a half years, we now know the truth about the detainees at Guantanamo: some of them are terrorists, some of them are foot soldiers, and some of them were just innocent people, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. But the detainees at Guantanamo have one thing in common - with each other, and with us - they are all human beings, and they are all worthy of humane treatment."

Thus, in the face of adverse public opinion and White House opposition, Frakt bravely defended a constitutional principle as all-encompassing, including under its protections even those who might seek to destroy us and the very constitutional principles for which we stand. In fact, he said, "It is a testament to the continuing greatness of this nation, that I, a lowly Air Force Reserve major, can stand here before you today, with the world watching, without fear of retribution, retaliation or reprisal, and speak truth to power. I can call a spade a spade, and I can call torture, torture."

To me, that makes Maj. David Frakt a patriot and this a great country. Happy Fourth of July.

To Mr Tom Cordle, I had the great pleasure to read such a refreshing letter that to me was not only right on the money but in a quite different tone than any other previously read (here or in other forums/op-eds). Thank you! Perhaps it should be the day of remembrance not only of those who sacrificed their lives for freedom but also for those who lost theirs beleiving the fallacies of their respective govts. To me the death of an 18 year old U.S., German, Japanese, Russian or any other boy is just as wasteful...and criminal! Genklag

Wesley Clark spoke The

Wesley Clark spoke The Truth. The greatest enemy of the Elites is The Truth. The Elites will destroy The Truth every chance they get. McCain is no hero--McCAIN IS LYING SCUM.

How dumb can people be?

How dumb can people be? When the Soviets wanted to place an agent in the US they trained him to pass as an American. Even overseas call centers train their operators to speak with a midwest accent, so Americans will think they are speaking with someone in Iowa instead of New Delhi. If a radical Islamic group wanted to infiltrate the highest level of the US Government, do you really think they would choose a black man named Barack Hussein?

I approved of Clark's

I approved of Clark's statement; because it's true. What the more disturbing aspect of the hoopla over his comments is the fact that the MSM didn't dutifully research the story. If you are responsible for just ONE crash, chances are you'll never fly again. I believe at the time of McCain's enlistment that number was TWO; so please how the hell did he crash FOUR and not lose his wings?

A racist, fearmongering

A racist, fearmongering right-wing neighbor of mine printed out this very same hate-filled email missive, folded it neatly, taped it shut and drove down to my mailbox where he opened MY mailbox, put in the folded papers, closed it and drove off. I reported it to my local Obama campaign who was distressed to hear what had happened and reminded me that putting something into someone's mailbox is, in fact, a federal crime punishable with up to a $5,000 fine (stupid really IS as stupid does--the smarmy Forrest Gump quote at the end of this ridiculous viral email). Four days later, my homemade wooden Obama sign was removed from its steel post at the curb and flung into my yard. I can't imagine doing this to someone who supported McCain, I can't imagine anyone I know doing this, but this is my NEIGHBOR and it's shocking how these types of ignorant fear tactics still work! I fear that we are in for some really ugly, racist fearmongering garbage this fall. Disagreeing on policy is one thing, but fighting the ignorance that is so prevalent is really upsetting to me.

Wesley Clark was correct.

Wesley Clark was correct. If Kerry had said the same thing about Bush, he would have been correct also.

The Oath of Enlistment I,

The Oath of Enlistment I, ___________________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. bush.mccain, and i all had to raise our hand and say this.how quickly some forget what was in the oath.to set aside the constitution for any reason is a breach of that oath.and the UCMJ makes it clear that is a charge of treason.ps when you get that DD214 is doesn't let you out of the oath, nor does it say to wear a flag pin to make an endrun around the constitution

Patriotism is love of

Patriotism is love of country... not blind support of its crimes. Patriotism is not flag waving or flag wearing. Neither is silence in the face of evil. Yankee Doodle Deadly.... very worth a google.

Wesley Clark made a

Wesley Clark made a perfectly neutral observation, a very military blunt statement of fact. It had no effect on my opinion of John McCain as a candidate for president. That "they" goes ballistic tells me more about them than Wesley Clark or John McCain. It tells me about McCain's supporters who grasp for any factoid to denigrate "them". "They", as members of their "clan", must destroy their enemy. All else including their self interest, truth,... must wait until "they" destroy the boggy man. "We have nothing to fear but fear itself".

Wearing a flag pin is a

Wearing a flag pin is a right given by free speech. I wear my my dog tags, received in 1954, believing that is my statement of my patriotism. All the talking faces that equate the pin to something real are just FOOLS, who say things they have heard from others, to justify the ideas that dance around in their addled brain.

To add to Michal 54's

To add to Michal 54's comment about cleaning up the press in the United States: Freedom of the Press is certainly the greatest safeguard against government abuse. Due to the gross deregulation of the Federal Communications Commission through the 1990's and under the Bush Administration of 2000, the major networks wielding almost all of the licenses to use our public airwaves have completely lost the sense of civic duty and journalistic integrity. The standards for the right to use the airwaves for television need to be elevated to much higher scrutiny. When the owner of an American news corporation, like Rupert Murdoch (of Fox News) sits down to eat with two powerful public officials, as he did with George W. Bush and Gordon Brown recently in England, behind closed doors, the public should question the content of the organization...is it news or propaganda? The regulations for "public service" needs to be returned to the FCC so that American TV news networks will be obligated to provide factual, encompassing and important news content instead of the news-like, opinionated swill spat at the American people for the sole purpose of profit and swaying opinion. Journalism is not about what people want to hear, but what people need to hear.

Find the Cost of

Find the Cost of Freedom Independence Day is a day of celebration, but it ought to also be a day of remembrance, a day in which we reflect on the sacrifice so many have made to gain and preserve that freedom. Sadly, those same sacrifices have been made far too often in wars that were unjustified and unwise. But that cannot diminish the sacrifice. Every soldier’s death is heroic, regardless of the cause or the circumstances. This truth was brought home to me by the sinking of the U.S. Leopoldville. For those who don’t know the story, on Christmas Eve of 1944, the troop ship Leopoldville was torpedoed in the English Channel five miles off the coast of Cherbourg, France. It was one of the worst naval disasters in U.S. history in terms of loss of life. The particulars of that event remained classified for fifty years, but what we now know is that due to bad planning, bad timing and bad judgment, about 800 young men lost their lives that night. One of those young men was my uncle, Ferrel McDonnell. He was just barely eighteen, a backwoods Michigan boy who was a self-taught artist with immense talent. He worked in oils and favored seascapes; ironically, his last not-quite-finished painting was of a shipwreck. I did not know Uncle Ferrel in an ordinary sense, but through pursuing my own art, I think I have come to know him in a way that is no less real. Perhaps that is one reason I chose to tell the story of the Leopoldville through his eyes. In 1997, I was honored to present this poem at the dedication of the Leopoldville Memorial. I hope it strikes a chord with you, and that you will pass it on to all you know on this day of celebration and remembrance. The Leopoldville Hell is not the place you think For I have seen its murky ink Though there was fire down in that hole It was cold and wet and chilled the soul December Channel, dark and cruel Coffin on that mournful Yule Fifty years have passed away Fifty years like yesterday … … I used to love to paint tall ships A thin brush in my fingertips The stain of oils beneath my nails White painted canvas wove my sails And dark hulls crashed on dashing waves That one day soon would be my grave There was a bond with me and sea As though I knew my destiny Just eighteen and off to France Oh, how I should have loved this chance! But there would be no brush or paints Or galleries filled with patron saints Or moonlit nights in sad cafes Or learning continental ways Or sailboats seen along the Seine Or romance on a smoky train No, I was on my way to kill And test some warrior’s iron will Against this painter’s gentle heart Ah! That would be the hardest part To shoot a man and hear his cries And know that something in me dies With all the blood that pours from him – How could I ever paint again? But I had had to still that voice And anyway, I had no choice My duty here was very plain To stop an evil so insane The whole world trembled at its might So I had come to do what’s right A painter on his way to France A soldier on a ship by chance … Christmas Eve of ‘44 The Leopoldville just off shore Of Cherbourg and it’s dancing lights The U-Boat had us in her sights Torpedo caught us in the hold The water rushed in--Oh, so cold! And steel and wood and flesh all met Oh, God, I wish I could forget! At first the meaning was not plain And everywhere confusion reigned We did not even dare suspect That we were on a sinking wreck But when the crew made for the boats Our hearts jumped heavy in our throats We stood there waiting, wondering why Like human cargo left to die But heroes rose up everywhere And brave hearts fought their own despair To comfort wounded, dying, weak And tried to find the words to speak They gave their all that some might live Till they had nothing left to give Then prayed to find the strength to stand “God! Oh God, make me a man!” I saw my gallant Captain Crain Go down into the hold again To save young soldiers from their doom As icy water filled the room They dragged their battered bodies straight Across the jagged boilerplate And crawled up on the deck to wait For orders – and the hand of Fate But orders were not quick to come And he knew there could still be some Alive below in freezing cold So he went back into the hold And when, at last, he’d done his best He gave someone his own life-vest Too tired to stand, how could he swim? That was the last we saw of him Strong, young soldiers watching wept For promises would not be kept For children they had never seen For all the dying of their dreams Some were but boys, some not quite men But they would not be boys again For only men survived those sights And all grew old in that one night Each man answered his own way And tried keep his fears at bay Some tried to prove that they were strong Some sang their favorite Christmas songs Some laughed and tried to hide their fears Some cried and tried to hide their tears Some stood there frozen, cold and numb Some prayed to God for help to come The Brilliant came through churning seas Answering our urgent pleas She pulled along our starb’rd side “Jump or die!”, her crewmen cried Men climbed up on the rolling rail And prayed somehow they would not fail To breach that twenty feet and odd – And leaped into the arms of God Some conquered space and borrowed time And made the Brilliant or its lines But others lost their deadly bet And plunged into the dark, cold, wet And swallowing sea and fought for breath And knew the briny taste of death Or fought the water’s clawing pull Till they were crushed between the hulls Some could not jump and so they stayed Until the final act was played The stern went down, the bow was tipped But still no call “Abandon ship!” But what were words to those who saw And felt that sinking final yaw Some simply stepped into the sea And reached out for eternity And when the Leopoldville sank at last Some rode it down with one great gasp Of spinning, sinking, sucking swirl Into a dark and choking world The cold, cruel water dragged them down They knew they were about to drown Some tried to scream, but made no sound But you could hear them all around – “Momma!” “Momma!” “Momma!” Cherbourg glittered on the shore Laughing at our dreams of war To die and never fire a shot To die and never know for what No glory, only senseless waste With salty, oily aftertaste No glory, only drowning dance Death by simple, crazy chance … But death was not the end of things For some still feel its searing sting In wounds they will forever feel In hearts that never really heal In faded photos, black and white In haunting voices in the night In endless days spent asking why A son or husband had to die? But does it matter, after all What place a dying soldier falls? What matters is the answered call for freedom Who measures sacrifices made? Who faults the charging Light Brigade? Who dares deny the price was paid for freedom There will be channels yet to cross And wars to fight that can’t be lost And some will pay the final cost for freedom But let there be no bitter tears Remember all the better years And those whose blood has bought and paid That we might live lives unafraid So let us honor valiant men And let the word go forth again There is but one thing worth the price Of such unselfish sacrifice “Freedom!” “Freedom!” Freedom!” ©1997 Tom Cordle

The only reason Gen. Clark's

The only reason Gen. Clark's comment was "unwise" or "lunkheaded" is because of how the mainstream media is distorting it. It seems to me that they are comparing it to the Republican's swift boaters' lying and disgracing inaccurately the military career of Kerry, when in truth Gen. Clark did nothing of the sort. He praised McCain's military efforts, but simply and truthfully stated that this type of military experience is not what is necessary to be an effective leader. If we, the people, need to clean up one system, it is our press - starting with bringing back the fairness doctrine and then breaking up the monopolies that control what is presented in the press.

Politically lunkheaded? No.

Politically lunkheaded? No. It isn't. And for absolutely, precisely the reason Winship talks about the article. Sure, Wes Clark gets hammered. Sure, everybody clutches their pearls and cries 'swift boating!" But the criticism is out there now. In the same way that the 'Barack Obama is a Muslim' whisper is out there, now the 'John McCain is inexperienced' is out there. General Clark understands what you, apparently, do not. He stood up made a valid criticism, and took a slug or too. But he got the grenade away.

So what is a true American

So what is a true American patriot? It is someone who supports and defends the letter of the American Constitution. Don't like something in our Constitution and want to change it? Then there are clearly defined processes to affect such changes. Or are you someone who engages in actions that are counter to the language in our Constitution? There is a word that describes such action: TREASON.

These chain letter email

These chain letter email campaigns do nothing but enrage me and reading articles like this only infuriates me further that these criminal political operatives continue to press their bullshit agenda. My expertise is information security and online network forensics, and I've decided to make a concerted effort to expose the creators of these smears. It might not be easy, depending how wily the original perps were in covering their tracks, but it certainly is possible to at least discover the originating machines that the perps wrote these falsities from early on in their email campaign. All it takes is discovering one identity or organization where one chain originated from to bring about a defamation/libel suit against these operatives and with the proper press coverage, it's more than possible to change a few minds as well as minimize, if not completely eliminate, the present campaigns. It's still hard to say whether exposure would change the minds of those so filled with hatred and bigotry such as Jim Peterson's associates, but for those like Jim Peterson himself such evidence would likely make him understand the stupidity of the bogus charges. First I need your help in sending me any and every email that you've ever received with these these smears to an email address I've just opened up stopthepropaganda gmail.com If you're also in the Infosec field and would like to assist, please don't hesitate in emailing me as well at the above address. Also, if you're an attorney in the legal field willing to also provide assistance in the form of consultation and/or litigation please also email me at the above address. Thank you.

What Mr. Winship states that

What Mr. Winship states that the remark by Gen. Wesley Clark was "politically lunkheaded", then I assume he means that it was flawed from a rhetorical point of view because it opened him up to attack by angry people understanding themselves as patriots, and eager to censure others as traitors. And yet the obvious truth of the remark will be apparent to anyone who considers that leadership in civil society requires totally different virtues than those of the warrior. In fact, in any other context, the remark is a truism. Not wanting to defend it is an expression of a lack of civil courage which should make us all ashamed.

Another typically

Another typically "well-educated" fundamentalist Christian - or - is it Karl Rove and Associates doing what they do best?

If McCain wins and things

If McCain wins and things continue on the same track, things will get much worse. We don't need another Neo Con war monger running the show.

The only thing that

The only thing that terrorizes me is the fact that 911 goes unpunished to this day. And I hear not one candidate speak the truth of it.

Here's how I respond to

Here's how I respond to these scurrilous emails: I find the corresponding writeup on Snopes.com (proclaiming the email content to be false) and email the link to all the email recipients. I start off by saying "Snopes says it's false," and include a two- or three-line summary. I don't lose my temper; I just state it calmly, as fact. I get a *lot* of apologies back. We have to remember that, while a lot of people don't want to know the truth, many others do.

Whether Wesley Clarks'

Whether Wesley Clarks' statement is right or wrong misses the point entirely. It was counterproductive to say it, especially on behalf of Obama. There are many, many reasons to fault McCain (too numerous to even need footnotes) but to attack his military service smacks suspiciously of being very Rovian-like. While I may agree with much of what Nader stands for I object to his spoiler tactics. He should be gathering support all year long at the local level, not grandstanding in the 11th hour. I truly believe the only one at this point who can regain the trust of the world is Barak Obama and maybe only because he does have an unusual name.

I also agree with Alan that

I also agree with Alan that flying a fighter plane is no qualification to be President. I also agree with the those who think Obama's religion should prohibit him from being President. Anyone stupid enough to believe that God is on "our" side or that God controls things, or that God this or God that, should NOT be our President, regardless of whether they are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, etc. We need someone SMART for ONCE. For the love of intelligence and science, vote for Ralph Nader!

I happen to agree with Genl.

I happen to agree with Genl. Wesley Clark and felt his opinion to be right on the mark. For John McCain to feel that this was "below the belt" is the height of hypocrisies especially after trotting out on stge, one of the Swift boat participants in chalenging John Kerry's patriotism and service to his country. By the way, notice that no one from the McCain camp had challenged anything General Clark had said.

As Samuel Johnson said,

As Samuel Johnson said, "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel." All sorts of horrific acts are justified in the name of patriotism. The rich and powerful hide behind it in order to engage in war and the killing of innocents. Workers have no country, we are all international citizens with common interests. Our rulers use patriotism to pit us against each other and fight for their benefit. Workers of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains!

Americans had better find

Americans had better find their common ground and stand up for their liberties no matter who is attacking them and for whatever reasons. Patriotism is, as the "lowly" Maj. Frakt said, "calling torture, torture." In a way, patriotism as a civil virtue is political self-defense against the aggression of the State against anyone who has committed no crimes and ensuring the state does not ignore its own laws or heritage. Patriotism here would also mean a critical examination of Obama and his lack of understanding of the US Constitution on two fronts (and no, for the love of God, I am not a McSame supporter). Consider his sponsorship of the UN-administered Global Poverty Act that will siphon an estimated $850 billion over the next 13 yrs. Where does it say in the Constitution that he has the right as President, Senator or any other function to redistribute global wealth? Second, he voted on behalf of the FISA bill and missed another chance to hold someone breaking federal laws accountable, the President as well as the phone companies. Patriotism is simply keeping your eyes and your mouth open, no matter who it is or why that is destroying the Constitution of the United States. As for McSame, that label speaks for itself: More criminal wars, military surveillance (deemed totalitarian when it happens in other countries), more "free" markets ruled by global corporations, more of the same illegal, totalitarian bullshit. Maybe they'll even rig another election.

You know what's most

You know what's most depressing about this article? The lumpen Amurican quoted in the article, "when you hear so many people saying . . . how can they be wrong?" Talk about ignorant!

I think Mr Winship is saying

I think Mr Winship is saying that Clark's statement is politically unwise not untrue. I agree with you, Alan, that it's a true statement but I also agree that it's not a politically smart one.

Hurrah for Maj Frakt. I

Hurrah for Maj Frakt. I hope that Mr Winship will follow his career over the next couple of years, to see if it suffers. I must pick a nit: although I am not a fan of Gen'l Wesley Clark, his comment, quoted by Mr Winship: " I don't think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president," seems to me to be right on the money. Perhaps Mr Winship can explain why he disagrees with the General's evaluation. Best wishes, Alan McConnell
