Why We Were Falsely Arrested

St. Paul, Minnesota - Government crackdowns on journalists are a true threat to democracy. As the Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., this week, police are systematically targeting journalists. I was arrested with my two colleagues, "Democracy Now!" producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, while reporting on the first day of the RNC. I have been wrongly charged with a misdemeanor. My co-workers, who were simply reporting, may be charged with felony riot.

The Democratic and Republican national conventions have become very expensive and protracted acts of political theater, essentially four-day-long advertisements for the major presidential candidates. Outside the fences, they have become major gatherings for grass-roots movements-for people to come, amidst the banners, bunting, flags and confetti, to express the rights enumerated in the Constitution's First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Behind all the patriotic hyperbole that accompanies the conventions, and the thousands of journalists and media workers who arrive to cover the staged events, there are serious violations of the basic right of freedom of the press. Here on the streets of St. Paul, the press is free to report on the official proceedings of the RNC, but not to report on the police violence and mass arrests directed at those who have come to petition their government, to protest.

It was Labor Day, and there was an anti-war march, with a huge turnout, with local families, students, veterans and people from around the country gathered to oppose the war. The protesters greatly outnumbered the Republican delegates.

There was a positive, festive feeling, coupled with a growing anxiety about the course that Hurricane Gustav was taking, and whether New Orleans would be devastated anew. Later in the day, there was a splinter march. The police-clad in full body armor, with helmets, face shields, batons and canisters of pepper spray-charged. They forced marchers, onlookers and working journalists into a nearby parking lot, then surrounded the people and began handcuffing them.

Nicole was videotaping. Her tape of her own violent arrest is chilling. Police in riot gear charged her, yelling, "Get down on your face." You hear her voice, clearly and repeatedly announcing "Press! Press! Where are we supposed to go?" She was trapped between parked cars. The camera drops to the pavement amidst Nicole's screams of pain. Her face was smashed into the pavement, and she was bleeding from the nose, with the heavy officer with a boot or knee on her back. Another officer was pulling on her leg. Sharif was thrown up against the wall and kicked in the chest, and he was bleeding from his arm.

I was at the Xcel Center on the convention floor, interviewing delegates. I had just made it to the Minnesota delegation when I got a call on my cell phone with news that Sharif and Nicole were being bloody arrested, in every sense. Filmmaker Rick Rowley of Big Noise Films and I raced on foot to the scene. Out of breath, we arrived at the parking lot. I went up to the line of riot police and asked to speak to a commanding officer, saying that they had arrested accredited journalists.

Within seconds, they grabbed me, pulled me behind the police line and forcibly twisted my arms behind my back and handcuffed me, the rigid plastic cuffs digging into my wrists. I saw Sharif, his arm bloody, his credentials hanging from his neck. I repeated we were accredited journalists, whereupon a Secret Service agent came over and ripped my convention credential from my neck. I was taken to the St. Paul police garage where cages were set up for protesters. I was charged with obstruction of a peace officer. Nicole and Sharif were taken to jail, facing riot charges.

The attack on and arrest of me and the "Democracy Now!" producers was not an isolated event. A video group called I-Witness Video was raided two days earlier. Another video documentary group, the Glass Bead Collective, was detained, with its computers and video cameras confiscated. On Wednesday, I-Witness Video was again raided, forced out of its office location. When I asked St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington how reporters are to operate in this atmosphere, he suggested, "By embedding reporters in our mobile field force."

On Monday night, hours after we were arrested, after much public outcry, Nicole, Sharif and I were released. That was our Labor Day. It's all in a day's work.

I was a Street Medic during the Conventions. they were targeting us as well. I can only hope that Amy Goodman and other progressive media report on how the 100% Democrat City Council and almost 100% Democratic City Council in Minneapolis gave them the legal authority to do this. In the months before the Convention, with their "Free Speech Committees" where we the public were not allowed. Ask Michelle Gross of Communities United Against Police Brutality in Minneapolis, she will tell you all about it.

I just want to start off

I just want to start off thanking Amy and all her colleagues at Democracy Now! for being courageous, determined, and dedicated to their work, in spite of the opposition they face. Their work, as well as that done by other fearless and independent media, is very inspiring. Thank you all. The actions of the St. Paul PD at the RNC protests were nothing short of bold, outrageous, and excessive. Sheriff Bob Fletcher should be ashamed of what he has let his officers get away with. I’m incredulous over the stories I’ve been reading of how non-violent protesters and Press were treated; more and more sordid information continues to surface. The St. Paul officials treated many of those gathered in peaceful assembly, as though they were violent criminals. The transparently unjust acts perpetrated against peaceful citizens, both active protesters, and bystanders merely in the vicinity of the protests, should leave all Americans questioning the security of their constitutional freedoms. I cannot begin to fathom the minds of those who don’t see anything wrong with law enforcement using wanton violence and intimidation tactics against peaceful activists and journalists. My jaw dropped when one of the Democracy Now! Producers, Sharif Abdel Kouddous, said that he was actually “kicked in the chest” by one of the officers. Of course, the St. Paul PD have thus far denied any wrong doing, but lets not forget that the NYPD denied allegations made against them after the 2004 RNC protests, and were subsequently proved to be nothing but liars. The New York Times reported that the NYPD employed the use of agent provocateurs during those protests. Does it come as a surprise then, that authorities are now going after the likes of I-Witness Video, who caught them in their lies the first time around? It seems many of those in positions of power and authority like to pretend as though they don't know what's really going on, but they only maintain this farce because they want to avoid personal responsibility for their disgraceful and unconstitutional conduct. And with that, I will close on an upbeat note. “FBI agents had been investigating allegations of corruption in the Ramsey County [St. Paul, MN] Sheriff's Department for some months…” The Pioneer Press http://origin.twincities.com/ci_10343193?nclick_check=1 Oh, what is that old adage? "...for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Yeah, that's the one. :)

These are obviously advanced

These are obviously advanced forms of facism with the arrests and detention of innocent people who've committed no crime whatsoever. Amy, her fellow journalists, and protesters must be commended for their heroism and raw courage in the face of these nazi tactics designed to blind America to what's truly happening under their feet. The establishment is sending one mean message to all Americans: "Shut up and sit down and do not dare reveal the crimes we are perpetrating against innocent people who want their grievances properly redressed and their Constitution adhered to." Acts of police brutality against journalists and protesters, exercising their legal rights of speech and assembly, should be perceived as criminal behavior. Instead, in a society full of corruption and cronyism, these police will be lauded for their efforts and given badges of courage at the expense of the security of the people; I predict they'll be treated as heroes rather than the criminals they have become. Welcome to Orwell's 1984.

Sue them. Sue them

Sue them. Sue them lots. Also file criminal charges, there's no way what they did is legal. Charge them with felony assault - if shoving a cop in Detroit is Felony Assault, what you got certainly is. Also abuse of police power, false arrest, violation of civil rights [unlimited penalty for that!]

I want to applaud Amy

I want to applaud Amy Goodman as well as the many commentators here. I read you all. Agree, for the most part, with you all. We are creeping towards armed revolt as the only plausible response. Revolution is in the air. The detention camps have already been built. All it will take is a decision by Bush/Cheney to stay in office if Obama is winning big and PRESTO! -- martial law might be invoked. Can they RESIST such a temptation? Just to see if they can get away with that too? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Use your power. The names of

Use your power. The names of the arresting cops are on the paperwork. Publicize them, get their names out to the public over and over again.

Sadly, I have discovered

Sadly, I have discovered that Amy Goodman is a Left Gatekeeper. She has dismissed any notion of looking more deeply into questions about what really happened on 911. She has ignored Ron Paul. She ignores the role of the Federal Reserve and the international banking cartels. Sorry Amy, I stopped counting on you for anything beyond the usual liberal noise since I subscribed to www.brasschecktv.com

Thank you, Ms Goodman, for

Thank you, Ms Goodman, for your patriotism and courage; and thanks to all the independent media. We realize now that no future protest assemblies can be peaceful: the corporatist-fascists will order their thugs to commit violent acts of terrorism on American citizens, as they have been doing for years now. Our Constitutional rights have been destroyed; this deliberate violence by our officials is a death threat against all American citizens. Also, history shows that tyrants who spy on their own citizens inevitably move to killing their own citizens. Thus, spying is also a death threat. How are we to respond to death threats? Contacting officials or changing officials doesn't work any more; they have ignored our peaceful petitions, and the elections are rigged. Here are historical modes of resistance: 1) Lawsuits. Hit the tyrants in the wallet. 2) Nationwide general strike. 3) Coordinated protests in every capitol city, with thousands of citizens in the streets. (Repeat stikes/protests periodically, or hold for as long as it takes to disrupt business.) 4) Revolution. It took Romania less than 2 weeks to get rid of Ceausescu (although the overthrow was quicky hijacked by 'former' Communists). Romanians rose up in a time of failed economy, media control, suppression of dissent, brutality by police/secret police, and removal of basic human rights. All these are now present in the US (signs of fascist coup as widely noted). The Romanian revolution was triggered by this backdrop plus one 'tiny' incident – an attempt to shut up a dissident. If American citizens are unable to use methods 1, 2, and 3, will attempts to silence dissidents become our tipping point? - One more thought: Corporatist-fascists have tied our national economy to weapons sales to 2nd and 3rd world countries. Death-profiteers require perpetual war to ensure perpetual customers; hence, they spend much time instigating war-frenzy in the populace and silencing dissent. Death is inevitable for all of us. How do we want to live?

The United States is

The United States is humanistically dysfunctional. People who say: "This is not the way Americans act!" completely miss the point. Fascist behavior is at the core of what America is about. The miracle is that during a short span of history, a few "liberal" men and their female supporters were able to instill values of humanism to create the potential of a democracy. Franklin, Washington, and Jefferson recognized the tenuous nature of the social contract they had created and left it to future generations to fix. Unfortunately, the most fascist DNA in the American Republic has dominated the political landscape. Few Americans will come to the aid of Amy and her colleagues, such as occurred in among French citizens several years ago when French youth of Arab descent were harassed on the streets of metropolitan France following days of intense rioting. Don't expect the USA sheep to support the demonstrators in Minnesota like these French who really advocate for their democracy. And, don't expect the mainstream media to bear witness to these events. The only report in the NY Times was on a blog at the Convention, which reported: "Police arrested 10 people on Tuesday, bringing to 295 the number of people who have been arrested here since the Republican National Convention began, law enforcement authorities said." No report of the arrest of journalists was found. These actions are not sad, they are outrageous and reflects directly on the character of the police officials in St. Paul and Gov. Pawlenty. Liberty, use it or lose it!

Amy: You need to do MORE! I

Amy: You need to do MORE! I thank you for your past work on making people aware of the current fascist trends, but you really need to do more. You had one show on DN where 9/11 was debated by the "Loose Change" guys and the Popular Mechanics liars, but that was not nearly enough. Think about it: 2 wars, the Patriot Act, and the shredding of the Constitution have come about because of 9/11. But what do we really know about that day? Even the 9/11 commission admits the pentagon lied repeatedly. Why? This administration has lied about everything, but the public accepts the official story about 9/11? That story is riddled with holes. Where is the proof? Where are the videos of the "terrorists" getting on the planes? Where is the video of the plane hitting the pentagon? There is a group called "Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth." They say that the World Trade Center was brought down by Controlled demolition. That group of working professional engineers and architects is over 400 strong. They are writing peer reviewed papers that prove the official story is a lie. Where is the press coverage of that? The MSM is controlled. I am challenging you Amy. Contact Richard Gage from A&E for 9/11 Truth and have him on your show. This is a wake up call for you. All you journalists who have been sitting on 9/11 will face a day of reckoning when you realize that our country has lost all of its freedoms and YOU DIDN"T SAY ANYTHING. Let the people hear the truth. The emperor has not clothes. 9/11 was an inside job.

Where are they? Where are

Where are they? Where are the networks? Where is the coverage? Has everyone been bought off or shut down by the veep's office? My God, what's happening here!?! WAKE UP AMERICA! While I'm reading this, even NPR is talking about the variety of foods available "on a stick" at some fair in Minnesota. Holy Shit!!!

It seems these days that the

It seems these days that the word "protester" is becoming synonymous with "criminal" and "anarchist". The nightly news routinely depicts protesters as "anarchists", so freedom of assembly is being criminalized.

Now, tell us what has

Now, tell us what has happened to the other 400 protesters who have been arrested, houses raided and kept in jail without reaason in St. Paul????

I hope you win big enough in

I hope you win big enough in a lawsuit that Democracy Now becomes self-funded.

Besides electing Obama, our

Besides electing Obama, our recourse should be to publicize this as much as possible and bring a lawsuit against the city. The way the KKK is kept broke from lawsuits by the Southern Poverty Law center. I've contributed to the Southern Poverty Law Center and we should all contribute to Amy's defense fund.

Thank you Amy. Its a shame

Thank you Amy. Its a shame to see how far our country has sunk.I fear that this is only a prelude of things to come.

A true revolution is on the

A true revolution is on the horizon. We can go back to bed and sleep through these dark days, But what we need is a Absolute Revolution. dissolve the current Government and reform the government. Presidents be gone. One Supreme Commander for the Armed forces is not what the great Republic needs. We need a Coalition of Governors and a supreme Governor. with the Supreme Governor answering to the Coalition. From there on we can have a true Democratic country. On another Note. Throw out those Capitalists. Execute them all. Toss the Lobby groups out as well. Change the monetary system and learn to have everything distributed Equal. But thats just my opinion. The people need to fight for whats there. to stand up and become truly democratic.

You have my greatest

You have my greatest appreciation for all of your reporting efforts now, during this unsavory and frightening time of political dissent. and for earlier efforts as well, that have demonstrated your courage and fair minded reporting. Thank you.

You are a true patriot. Did

You are a true patriot. Did you see any signs of agent provocateurs out there?

Thank you Amy. Keep up the

Thank you Amy. Keep up the good fight! Please take care of yourself though, we absolutely need you and your reporters out there. Nicole, Sharif – take care and we're with you in spirit! DEMOCRACY – or even a hint of it – NOW!!!

Hitler's Germany? Stalin's

Hitler's Germany? Stalin's Soviet Union? Mao's China? Saddam Hussein's Iraq? No, this is Bush's America. If there is a legal defense fund and a nice fat lawsuit pending, count me in as a contributor.

I do not believe that the

I do not believe that the Democracy Now! arrests were just random acts of police excess; rather the journalists were most likely deliberately identified and targeted for arrest. This is a common tactic of fascist takeover - terrorizing journalists and opponents of the regime serves to reduce the number of voices who would speak out against the rulers' policies. Though it is a rather massive tome, "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer lays out the successive stages of fascist takeover. Read this book and you will see the eerie parallels to current events in our country. The FEMA "mass immigration detention centers" that have been constructed around our country are ready for the next phase of the totalitarian takeover. For those of you who would believe that this is solely the result of the Bush/Cheney administration and that the election of Obama/Biden will reverse the course, Shirer's book illustrates the folly of this belief. It seems that we are now on an unstoppable course towards our own brand of fascist dictatorship. Our choices are few -- flee the country, join the dictatorship, or attempt to ride it out until its inevitable self-destruction. To stand against the tide of terror will, in all probability, result in imprisonment or death. It couldn't happen in the U.S., or could it? History is quite explicit in its depiction of the rise and fall of fascist dictatorships.

This an outrageous abuse of

This an outrageous abuse of the freedom of the press. And the story is going unreported in the mainstream media. Nothing will undo a democracy faster than restricting free speech, assembly, and a free press.

The comment that it is "sad

The comment that it is "sad our country has become so fascist" is the very reason it has become so fascist. The acts of this police state should cause outrage, demand for accountability, prosecution of those who abuse their authority. Delegates, including Congresspeople and Senators standing beside the demonstrators and media and honoring their oath of office to defend the Constitution. Americans are acquiescing to the intimidation and violence used by law enforcement (a misnomer) to the overthrow of our country by "brownshirts", the same as happened in Germany in the 1930's. Our so-called representatives have passed "enabling" acts at both the local and federal level to grant ambiguous powers of arrest and detention to law enforcement to facilitate these type of actions. The Founding Fathers would be doing more than holding Ms. Goodman in "high regard". It is time that those who abhor what is happening to our country spoke with righteous indignation, anger, and courage. For too long there has been appeasement and compromise to the point that such egregious violations of our rights occur with barely a whimper from progressives, and shameful silence from our representatives. The technological advantages our law enforcement possess today would have made the Nazi's deeply envious. It has been asked if it "could" happen here. It has happened here. I am not sad. I am disgusted and outraged. Are you? Enough to write to your representatives and demand they honor their oath of office? To donate to the National Lawyers Guild and similar organizations? Thank you Ms. Goodman for your continued fight for an America that actually reflects the promises of our Constitution.

You'll have to attend the

You'll have to attend the next rally in full battle dress next time! Armed and dangerous! Fight back.

I can only hope that an army

I can only hope that an army of ACLU attorneys will arrive ASAP and drive the city into bankruptcy with the resultant lawsuits!

The way to stop this conduct

The way to stop this conduct is in court, by means of extremely costly (to the cities involved) lawsuits. A few judgments of $100 million or so, would make St Paul think twice about authorizing police brutality.

Fear, control, and punish

Fear, control, and punish those who do not think like us under "our" God has become the way of this republican party. Decades ago we marched on Washington to protest the Vietnam War, @ 16 I knew the risks, but also had the security of knowing my rights as a citizen. The erosion of our rights, under the current administration again comes to light with these false attests. They are striking at the core of democracy and our hearts and souls as Americans, and as the world watches in disbelief, these clueless tunnel visioned hypocrites, drinking the kool-aid while holding up the soundbite cue cards, say to us "join us" or we will strike you down. I am saddened by this tragic event, and you Amy will recover pride intact, with new focus and strength of millions who believe in you and your efforts. I thank you for standing up for true democracy.

Thank God we are still

Thank God we are still allowed to say this is a free country--

democracynow.org is a "light

democracynow.org is a "light in the darkness".. the blending of news organizations and entertainment has changed the united states for the worse. the next administration needs to restore the fairness doctrine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairness_Doctrine

This is terrifying news.

This is terrifying news. Most shocking is hearing that secret service personnel ripped your valid press credentials right off of your neck. If this is the America the Republicans prefer -- and it clearly is -- I want no part of it. Though the "forefathers" of our country were most likely slave-owning, racist and sexist men, and certainly white, they did write a constitution that included a free press and a public free to question authority. I'm certain they're all rolling in their graves right now.

I also thank you! Your work

I also thank you! Your work at "Democracy Now!" has always been brilliant. I have watched footage from several independent news sources and have been horrified that this is "America". The United States whines when other countries arrest journalists, but we turn a blind eye when we do the same. I marched in the 60's and (was fortunate) that the small town in Texas had such a professional police force. No tear gas, no knees on necks - not like the outlaws in uniforms in St. Paul. Mayor Chris Coleman said that the officers showed "restraint" - one has to ask (after seeing some of the video) what outright lawlessness would have looked like! You don't tear-gas people doing what you tell them to! Yet that is EXACTLY what St. Paul's finest appear to have done. This is absolutely horrifying that the United States of America no longer believes in the Constitution.

What I would like to know is

What I would like to know is who is actually responsible for the violence? Are they RNC plants?

I've come to believe that

I've come to believe that freedom of speech is better respected in many other countries than in the US. It should be an outrage that people peacefully marching are arrested, not to mention brutally. Arresting the press is worse. Though I often regard tight security measures as excessive, useless, and paranoid, I can live with them. These arrests go beyond security: they are intimidation, clearly meant to deter future protests. Once it becomes routine (or is it already) to arrest people protesting, then we can move to arresting people who want to protest (see China and the recent Olympics). The day may come in our lifetime when China has loosened a bit and we have tightened a bit and freedom of speech is the same here and there.

Good grief! America better

Good grief! America better get ready for a lot more of this if McCain is elected.

I watched in' Shock and Awe'

I watched in' Shock and Awe' as Amy and the other journalists were violently arrested along with the protesters and as a Canadian I am deeply horrified to witness the police brutality of the new NAZI AMERICA!! Of course, I can see the viral political infestation coming our way with our own neo-consevative government cheering the Bush/Cheney cabal and supporting the illegal so called 'war on terror' being conducted by the largest terror organization on the planet! I am concerned that the American people have been so dumbed down and psychologically assaulted that they cannot fathom the political, social and economic consequences of keeping the neo-con corporate fascist regime in power. I think perhaps we here in Canada are hanging our heads lower in shame for these outrageous attacks on the constitutional rights of the American citizens than the Americans themselves as may be the case for much of the world that gazes on in staggering bewilderment at the diabolical transformation of democracy and freedom into tyrannical fascisim. It appears likely that the whole world may have to come to the rescue of the American people in acts of total non-violent , non-c0operation and impose strict sanctions against the US. It is an example of complete hypocricy that the the US is attempting to impose sanctions against the Iranians for their supposed nuclear weapons ambitions when the US has the greatest stalk piles of nuclear weapons on earth and threatens to use them against sovereign countries that refuse to do their bidding!! I can only imagine the huge numbers of new recruits flocking to the fold of the Al Queda organization and other extremist groups in response to the terror being unleashed acroos the globe by the US government. I pray that God/Godess give you, the American people, the strength, insight, wisdom, and power to make the change that will restore democracy and the constitution to the US. God help us all! Good night and good luck!
