Counts Still Under Way in Five House Races
    The Associated Press

Details on House races in which the outcome remained undecided Tuesday:

  • Georgia, 12th District: First-term Democratic Rep. John Barrow defeated Republican former Rep. Max Burns by 864 votes in results certified Wednesday. Burns has until Friday to demand a recount.

  • New Mexico, 1st District: Republican Rep. Heather Wilson led Democrat Patricia Madrid by fewer than 1,500 votes out of more than 200,000 cast, with about 3,700 ballots remaining to be qualified and tallied.

  • North Carolina, 8th District: Rep. Robin Hayes, a Republican, led Democrat Larry Kissell by about 450 votes. About 1,500 provisional ballots remained to be counted. Final results aren't expected until Friday.

  • Ohio, 2nd District: Rep. Jean Schmidt, a Republican who called decorated Vietnam veteran Rep. John Murtha a coward, was ahead of Democrat Victoria Wulsin by about 2,800 votes. Workers were to begin counting provisional and absentee ballots next week.

  • Ohio, 15th District: Rep. Deborah Pryce, a member of the House Republican leadership, leads Democrat Mary Jo Kilroy by 3,536 votes. Thousands of provisional ballots will be counted beginning Sunday - a day later than normal in deference to the Ohio State-Michigan football game Saturday.

  • Wyoming, 1st District: Republican Rep. Barbara Cubin was certified Wednesday as the winner over Democrat Gary Trauner by a difference of 1,012 votes.

  • In addition, Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., the subject of an FBI bribery investigation, will face fellow Democrat Karen Carter in a Dec. 9 runoff, and Rep. Henry Bonilla, R-Texas, will face Democratic former Rep. Ciro Rodriguez in a yet-unscheduled runoff to happen no sooner than Dec. 12.

  • In Florida, a first recount was completed Tuesday in the contest for the seat Rep. Katherine Harris gave up to make her failed Senate run. The Associated Press has declared a winner in that race: Republican Vern Buchanan, who leads Democrat Christine Jennings by about 375 votes, or less than 0.02 percent.

Two More Called Winners in House; Seven Races Undecided

    Thursday 16 November 2006

Seven House races were still undecided yesterday, more than a week after Democrats decisively won control of both chambers of Congress.

Five races were too close to call, including a Florida contest in which questions have been raised about electronic voting machines. Two more seats will be decided by runoffs in December.

Election officials in Wyoming and Georgia certified the incumbents as winners in two close races yesterday. Their challengers did not concede and had 48 hours to ask for a recount.

In Georgia, Rep. John Barrow (D) defeated Republican Max Burns by 864 votes out of more than 140,000 cast. In Wyoming, Rep. Barbara Cubin (R) beat Democrat Gary Trauner by about 1,000 votes out of nearly 200,000 cast.

Barrow's victory means Democrats successfully defended every seat they held in the House and Senate, as they rolled to majorities in both chambers of Congress during last week's voting.

Propelled by voter dissatisfaction with President Bush, the Iraq war and congressional scandals, Democrats picked up the six Senate seats they needed for a majority and have gained 29 House seats. They needed 15 to take control.

Another Democratic pickup became official yesterday, when Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) conceded to Joe Courtney after a recount gave Courtney a 90-vote edge in the closest race in the country.

Democrats trail in the five undecided House races in which votes must still be counted. Republican incumbents Heather A. Wilson of New Mexico, Robin Hayes of North Carolina and Jean Schmidt and Deborah Pryce of Ohio clung to narrow leads.

In the Florida race to replace Rep. Katherine Harris (R), Vern Buchanan (R) led Christine Jennings (D) by about 375 votes.
