Iran in Turmoil

Right now, the best source of up-to-the-minute reports on the evolving Iranian situation is from people in Iran sharing via social networking. We think twitter looks like perhaps the best source. We're going to be picking up selected tweets that appear to provide the best insight into what is happening. *Remember,* this is social networking, but it can also be used for social engineering. Verifiability is always an issue. Read with a cautious eye. -ma/TO

THE WHITE HOUSE: Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 20, 2009

Statement from the U.S. President Obama on Iran

The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.

Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples' belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

"The universal rights to

"The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights." Unless they're Palestinians, Iraqi, Afghan, Chilean, Cuban, Venezuela ... on and on throughout history. "We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost." Yet they never even counted Iraqi lives lost to an illegal invasion. Go figure.

Twitter is not a balanced

Twitter is not a balanced source. It doesn't accept Farsi, which is the only language of most Iranians. Therefore we are reading self-selected sources, people with education (i.e. children of businessmen) and not the poor who support Ahmadinejad. We seem to have forgotten that Ahmadinejad got elected popularly by the poor, because he promised to help them. His economic policies have been geared to the poor and not the rich, so the wealthy (just like in Venezuela and Cuba) want him out at any cost, and they are being backed in this effort by US covert actions.

"No longer about the

"No longer about the election." It never was. It's about US-sponsored forces trying to overthrow a government the US doesn't like. The Western left is behind the "resistance" because they desperately want a notch in Obama's belt. Really, folks, you've been had. Big time.

Remember, "social

Remember, "social engineering" is just another word for propaganda! Twittering yuppies on a rampage because they didn't win. I bet the countryside majority never heard of a twitter, but won nonetheless. This has CIA written all over it, sorry.

Did you hear Wolfowitz this

Did you hear Wolfowitz this morning opine for Moussavi? Another neo con led disruption? No way the US will go in with force to support the rebellion. We could hardly get that cute news reporter out of there a few weeks ago! Question? Is Obama being run by a pro Israeli shadow government?. I see a bombing rum coming out of this incident.

This is not about setting up

This is not about setting up for an invasion, that's much later if at all. This green revolution is about undermining the Iranian govment in the hopes it falls on its own. If that happens the CIA can covertly install a pro-US businessman like Mousavi as leader. This would simultaneously remove the only Arab regime still openly criticizing Israel and the only barrier to Exxon entering back into Iranian oil fields. It would also block China and Russia from having their hands on the spigot of Iranian oil. This is all about Realpolitik and the last ditch efforts of a failing American empire.

CNN is currently carrying a

CNN is currently carrying a story on Reza Shah Pahlavi, the son of the former U.S.-installed Shah of Iran, and a speech he gave on June 18 at Washington's National Press Club. "The moment of truth has arrived," he said. "The people of Iran need to know who stands with them." True, but, as mentioned below, not all Iranians support the anti-Ahmadinejad protests. Where does the Shah's son figure in all that's going on? What delusional vision is he entertaining from his exile here in the States.? Along with conjecture about the CIA and Wolfowitz and social engineering, will there be an attempt to revive vestiges of that other dictatorship inflicted on Iran by the US? Also would be useful to get the facts straight: Iran is not an "Arab regime", as mgmyers states, but predominantly ethnic Persian in language, culture, and ancestry. And the majority of Iranians are Shiite Muslims while most Arabs are Sunni Muslims. These differences are at the core of what divides the Islamist Iranian regime from its Arab neighbors.

You are right, of course,

You are right, of course, anonymous. Egregious error, the Iranians are predominantly Farsi-speaking Persians. My mix-up lets me elucidate a point on which you are mistaken though. The "core of what divides" Iran from the other Arab states is not, as you suggest, their ethnicity or religion. The core is economics. The other Arab-regimes have been replaced with pro-US profiteers, excepting perhaps Assad. Iran, and Ahmadinejad, are still hassling Israel over that little genocide quibble called the Palestinians. This, and Iran's nationalized oil sector that forms partnerships with Russia and Chine, is the core of what divides.

We, the people of Iran and

We, the people of Iran and not spies from mossad and the cia, are beginning to triumph. It is only through sheer will, and determination, and a lot of printed leaflets and organized PR that showed up at the last minute, and twitter accounts that we just decided to sign up for the day after the election. We will win and hopefully we can bring the Shah's son back and also SAVAK to kill all political enemies of the Shah. We really miss the Shah. When we think of the Shah, we think of a hazy summer memory, splashing in the swimming hole, and getting a call from Grandma on AT&T. We are fighting hard to restore democracy so that we can hand it over to a tyrant. Also, we want to put our oil into private hands and establish a private central bank so that we can borrow our own money at interest. Gotta go. The Basiji are about to shoot another beautiful art student in the face. Her name is Manizheh, which means "flowering peace cut down in her prime by a .22 rifle." Shalom.

Twitters coming in in

Twitters coming in in English are by definition coming from relatively privileged members of society. Americans calmly endured two stolen elections, and if there had been violent protests they would have been suppressed with force. Not so many public killings, but plenty of force. We send military aid to Mexico to suppress their popular unrest. So while I regret the suffering in Iran, I think we are not well placed to get all righteous about it. Plus, I understand the opposition candidate in Iran does not himself have clean hands.

This is CIA engineering

This is CIA engineering people. We want to get a business in there and control the oil..PERIOD. Think is is terrible someone got shot, how awful! We wouldn't do that in America right? Wrong, troops went in at Kent University and killed 8! Unarmed college students just protesting the war. Remember your history. America plays dirty....likes to talk clean.

It is good to see that so

It is good to see that so many posters recognize the protests in Iran as a CIA covert operation. The CIA has been in Iran for several years organizing groups for just such an occasion. One has to suspect that the murder of Neda may also have been done by the CIA. She was shot from a long distance by a sniper. The same thing happened in 1953 in Operation Agax that overthrew Mohammad Mosedeq. Then, Kremit Roosevelt paid criminals to commit random and public murders as well as other crimes to instill an atmosphere of fear and chaos. True, the Iranian police are brutal as are police all over the world. But it makes no sense for them to kill someone with a sniper. That is a US tactic. Now Neda is the symbol for the protest all over the world. Edward Bernays the father of public relations wrote that the most importnat thing PR professionals can do is create "crystallizing images." Neda's murder is such an image. What is crystalized is the thoughts of people all over the world.
