Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, in an interview with Portland TV station WMTW, described the election turnout as heavy for an off-year election. Dunlop said in most off- year elections the turnout is anywhere from 15 to 25 percent. He predicted that this year turnout could reach 50 percent.
One sign was the amount of absentee ballots that were processed in Portland, Maine. The Secretary of State said that last year 10,000 absentee ballots were processed during the Presidential election and this year 7,700 were processed.
Question One is clearly driving the turnout, it is a ballot measure that would overturn same sex marriage in the state.
