On the thirtieth anniversary of the seizure of the American Embassy in Tehran, street protests against the Iranian government erupted.
Iranian police clashed with protesters to break up marches across the capital according to news reports and state-controlled Iranian media. There have been reports of beatings and use of tear gas to disperse crowds.
President Obama released a statement late Tuesday night addressing the anniversary which closed with a sign of support for the protesters.
"The American people have great respect for the people of Iran and their rich history. The world continues to bear witness to their powerful calls for justice, and their courageous pursuit of universal rights. It is time for the Iranian government to decide whether it wants to focus on the past, or whether it will make the choices that will open the door to greater opportunity, prosperity, and justice for its people," the statement said. The Twitter feed #Iranelection has been pouring out on-the-ground reports from protesters with links to YouTube videos said to be from the scene.
Protesters shouting [Supreme Leader] "Khamenei is a Killer and his leadership is not approved."
Protesters stepping on a portrait of Khamenei. This video was touted by protest supporters on Twitter as a huge milestone, as showing someone the bottom of your shoe is a sign of great disrespect.
