Beck: We Should "Just Abolish Medicare"

by: Alex Seitz-Wald  |  Think Progress

Yesterday, Senate Democrats working on health care reform reached a compromise on the public option that will create a network of nonprofit insurers and allow Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 to buy into Medicare. The right has hypocriticallyopposed a government-run public-option while simultaneously defending Medicare. On his radio show today, Fox News host Glenn Beck called Medicare what it is — a “government-run health care plan.”

Beck attacked the new compromise and proposed a simple solution of his own — “abolish Medicare”:

CO-HOST: This is unbelievable, because the whole thing with the public option, is we were saying this is going to be like Medicare, they just want to make a big — make another Medicare program. And then they said no, public option is just competition.

BECK: And, wait wait wait. And I also said why don’t you just abolish Medicare, because it’s so wildly corrupt and out of control. It’s so inefficient, it is so bad and there’s $47 billion in suspected wrong payments, okay, in Medicare. So what are they saying — now remember, what we’re going to do — the compromise is we’re going to expand Medicare. That way there won’t be a public option, we’ll just — which doesn’t make any sense — we’re going to expand Medicare.

Medicare is actually more efficient than private health insurance and would be better at controlling costs than weaker public option plans. And while Republicans strongly opposed Medicare when it was created under President Johnson, it has become popular over time. When Rep. Anthony Wiener (D-NY) introduced an amendment to eliminate Medicare in July — urging conservatives to “put-up or shut-up” about their objection to government-run health care. Not a single member of Congress voted in favor.

Moreover, Medicare is hugely successful. Before it came into being, more than one in four seniors lacked health care and a third lived in poverty. Now every American over 65 has access to quality care. A Commonwealth Fund study found that people with Medicare “report fewer problems obtaining medical care, and less financial hardship due to medical bills, and higher overall satisfaction with their coverage,” compared to people with employer-provided care. 56 percent of Medicare beneficiaries rate their coverage a 9 or 10 on a scale of 10 while only 40 percent with private insurance do so.

well folks, FOX is a fascist agitation group, when are we going to take resolute action against them? gonna wait til they abolish the congress and declare a new fascist imperium?

I think the fact that Glenn

I think the fact that Glenn Beck is against Medicare, wants to abolish it, should be trumpeted to every senior in the country, and relentlessly repeated. This sort of foolishness should not be forgotten. Medicare is insanely popular and necessary. How he feels so comfortable in saying such a thing, well let’s not let him forget it.Korean Ginseng

I think it is important to

I think it is important to remember that Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck, and the MSNBC guys are not policy experts or journalists. They are entertaining shock jocks like Stern. They make their money by saying outrageous things, often with a hint of truth, but without any context. No one heard of Beck until he cried on Fox News and now he makes over 20 million a year.

Glenn Beck .... another term

Glenn Beck .... another term for angry little man

Beck is such a mindless

Beck is such a mindless idiot. One wonders if he and the others like him are on some serious drugs.

I feel sorry for this guy.

I feel sorry for this guy. He is mentally sick. He doesn’t know what he is talking about. This is so irrational and stupid one wonders of the state of mind of those who cheers him. It is nauseating to read this information.

Great point, there are 1/3

Great point, there are 1/3 living in poverty, Medicare isn't successful enough, single payer it!

watch it now, MSNBC is not

watch it now, MSNBC is not in the same cess pool as Fox. CNN can be a joke too. These days, you gotta get a little bit from each of them, even if Fox is full of lies.

Abolish Glen Beck

Abolish Glen Beck

No, Beck was crying on CNN's

No, Beck was crying on CNN's Headline News, so Fox got him after. I heard all this year Republicans claiming the health care bill would destroy Medicare, that they, the Republicans, had to save it. Abolishing Medicare has always been their motto before, so Beck is just reciting what they really believe. A little more like this, telling the truth instead of falsely claiming to defend "our" things, fooling the naive, and they will have no issues but whether Palin's ankles are too fat

Mr. Beck: I say this with

Mr. Beck: I say this with utmost sincerity sir, Please shut up. You pollute the air humans breathe.

Glenn Beck. A man with a

Glenn Beck. A man with a last name that rhymes with a marvelous Yiddish word for excrement.

The thing is, Beck presents

The thing is, Beck presents selected facts to make his case, and leaves out anything that demonstrates where he's really coming from. So, the people who listen to him religiously think he's right on. Do you think he told people that not a single member of Congress voted against Medicare? If he did, it came out sounding like some major government plan to dupe the people once again. Do you think he told people that it's far and away more efficient than private health care insurance? Not a chance.. So, the people who listen to him think he's one of those lone, brave voices, that he's on their side, protecting him from a government that's out of control. Really, very few people listen to others saying things they don't want to hear. They simply decide that whoever is saying those things is lying, leaving important information out, completely stupid, or some kind of fanatic in denial about the truth. That's to be guarded against, because it isn't just people on the Right that think that way.

I am one of the many seniors

I am one of the many seniors who finds Medicare much, much, much better than my old employee HMO's. It gives me real choices and very few hassles. Of course Medicare is relatively expensive. We are all either over 65 or afflicted with a serious disability. That makes us an expensive high risk group no private insurer would touch if they could help it. Yes, there is some fraud, but it is suppliers and perhaps nursing homes, not the seniors doing it and mostly not their doctors either. PRIVATE CORPORATIONS administer the day to day operations of Medicare. They need to devote more energy and resources to investigating fraud. When I tried to blow the whistle on the one provider I knew was inflating the bill, the employee of the PRIVATE corporation said they would look into it only if I obtained complete documentation from the doctor in question.

I'm with Anonymous on 12-10

I'm with Anonymous on 12-10 at 23:26 - "Abolish Glenn Beck"; better yet, Abolish HIS Med. Benefits, all of them. Let him pay FULL PRICE for the anti-psychotics he MUST be taking, so that he goes broke. No, don't bail him out; bail him into the nearest State run mental institution.

Everyone in the U.S.A.over

Everyone in the U.S.A.over 65 has access to medicare if he or she has a social security benefit. Everyone knows how social security works. Nothing is free. The problem is giving health care to those who are too poor to afford it... and this number is growing, not diminishing.

WHO BESIDES A ROBOT READY
