Lieberman Was for a Medicare Buy-In Before He Was Against it

by: Jason Leopold, t r u t h o u t | Report

Sen. Joe Lieberman, (I-Connecticut), has threatened to derail passage of a  health care reform bill in the Senate if the legislation includes a measure to expand Medicare to individuals beginning at age 55, a proposal Lieberman says he has long opposed. [For background, please see Truthout's report on the Senate's latest health care reform proposals.]

But as Brian Beutler of Talking Points Memo noted Monday, Lieberman has long "supported the idea of a Medicare buy-in as a promising vehicle for reform, including... as recently as three months ago."

Asked specifically about his position this past September, Lieberman now says that the Senate Finance Committee bill, finalized in October, dealt with the problem of the uninsured so well that the buy-in became redundant.

Lieberman denied that he had flip-flopped on the issue as he headed to a meeting Monday evening with the Democratic caucus.

"I didn't change my mind," Lieberman said. "I've been in this position for the last few weeks.

"We've got this very strong network and system of subsidies for people, including people who are 55-65 so the idea of the Medicare buy in no longer was necessary because they're taken care of very well under the Finance Committee proposal."

But an interview the Connecticut Post conducted with Lieberman last September, as first reported by the Plumline's Greg Sargent, should put the senator's denials to rest.

Well, they gave away the

Well, they gave away the store, the lot upon which it stood, and they have entered into a contract for perpetual indentured servitude. Way ta go, O.! Way ta go Kapo Joe! Mission accomplished!

Does anyone get the feeling

Does anyone get the feeling that Democrats and Republicans are just playing a sick, twisted game of "Good cop/Bad cop" with the American people; with no intention of ever bringing us into the 21st Century with the rest of the developed world? Seems like it sometimes. What must we look like to Europe, fighting AGAINST nationalized health insurance on behalf of the money-changers who sit between us and our doctor? Leiberman is now the leading threat to health! Cause of death? JOE LEIBERMAN!

Joe Liberman sold out, some

Joe Liberman sold out, some contender for the Democratic nomination!

One can but wonder whether,

One can but wonder whether, in the last few weeks, the health insurance corporations have promised big contributions to Lieberman's campaign fund ... or perhaps a well-paid job when he retires from the Senate.

Dr. Dean, head of the Dem

Dr. Dean, head of the Dem party, just came out on Olberman's show completely against the bill. He is calling for the dems to vote against the bill as it stands. In the new version Ins companies can't deny anyone for preexisting conditions, but the fine print says they can TRIPLE the premiums that elders will have to pay for a policy...and if you don't buy in you will be fined! This is outrageous, an insult to any thinking person, and the bill should be taken down in flames with great fanfare. Better nothing than this...by a long shot. Start again, make it really simple, and use the Reconciliation Vote to push it through in the face of the Blue Dogs. And, yes, throw LIERman out of his committee positions onto his slimey ass, and slide him over to the likes of Limbaugh and Colter...where he belongs.

Lieberman is a distraction.

Lieberman is a distraction. He is helping to implement this administration’s policy of doing nothing. This administration is making people believe they are doing something for them. So far they haven’t done nothing, zero. Lieberman is being rewarded with the Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee, for his fine job. And face it he is efficient. There is no difference between Lieberman and Obama. They are of the same fiber.

First to Anonymous at 22:55,

First to Anonymous at 22:55, please note that this is not the bill that Obama wanted. He, as president, can only recommend that legislation be undertaken to meet certain ends. It is up to Congress to draft and pass the bill, and in this case, by letting them take the lead, we have all been screwed royally. Call on President Obama to veto this bill if it ever makes it to his desk. And when he does, note for the American public who trashed the bill - Lieberman, Baucus, Lincoln, Stupak, Pelosi, Reid, the GOP - and make it very clear that he is going to ask for state Democratic committees to put up other candidates in their districts to run against these clowns and put progressives into Congress that he can actually work with. Then ask the President to throw out the GOP and Clinton Democrats on his Cabinet, including her Highness Hillary who has decided that she was elected, not appointed, and therefore should call the shots on foreign Policy. And finally, call on the President to fire Rahm Emanuel and other corporate hacks, and put in their place the people who originally ran his campaign and believed in what he was saying. It is time to stop keeping your promises to the Clintons and their backers, Mr. President, and make this your presidency, not theirs, the Family's, or corporate America's.

Be civil, says the blurb at

Be civil, says the blurb at the top. That's kinda hard when talking about Joe Lie berman...this scumbag son of a bitch through his actions will be responsible for the deaths of as many people per year as John Demjanjuk was for the whole of his sorry ass career as a Nazi concentration camp guard. Fuck Joe Lieberman.

Stepping back and examining

Stepping back and examining the chain of events surrounding Sen. Lieberman of the Lieberman Party and his public two-face over such short time on the expansion of Medicare, one gets the feeling that his earlier, offhanded (not too loud, casual, almost a footnote) "Yeah, I can go with that . . ." sticks out, in retrospect, as a veiled threat to his insurance industry cronies to up the ante, giving them a big fat hint. Now that he has received an even larger check than he usually gets from his corporate "clients" (probably in mail opened on last Thursday or Friday [before sundown]) who took the cue to add some zeros in front of the decimal point, he deadpans his assurance that now he won't support Medicare expansion.

Dump the Dems , all of them.

Dump the Dems , all of them. That is a ponderous statement because it means that the nazis will take overt power in 2010. They will do it anyway. Dump the Dems now and begin to form up for the ominous days to come. The fiction of the American republic is at an end.

Lieberman is clearly serving

Lieberman is clearly serving the insurance industry, and machinating at their behest, with every flip-flop. His most recent pretzel-twist is over the proposal for a Medicare buy-in which he actually proposed in one of his past incarnations. Obama, on review of this year, is a total fool in his pursuit of "bipartisanship" -- he can't seem to understand that he is not dealing with the Republican Party of 1909. What we have in 2009 is not a political party, despite its name -- it's a conspiracy of obstruction for the purpose of obstruction, negation, and sabotage. They were not exaggerating when they declared Obama's Waterloo to be their goal and purpose. Obama's brain is not sufficient for what has turned out to be his job -- he needs a spine as well. Yes, it's tough to call their bluff when there are only 60 possible adherents in the Senate, at least one of whom is a committed backstabber. We can only hope that Lieberman's exposure by decent Democrats will enable the Senate to regain some control of the process, by reconciliation if not by cloture. The advice Obama is getting from his adviser-buddies is additionally questionable in this regard.

In response to: Devon J.

In response to: Devon J. Noll, MPA: O. is president, a leadership position, ostensibly the top leadership position in our political system. He has provided no leadership, only tea and cookies, make nice, and make more nicer. All of his electoral promises ring hollow now, all of them. So don't wax wacky with exculpatory lyricism about O.

Things will not change in

Things will not change in America as long as we keep voting for Democrats or the Republicans as if they were alternatives to each other. Helen Caldicott said "America is the only country with one political party with two right wings." Both parties are owned by the same corporate interests. The "arguments" between them are only theater to make us think there is some difference, some choice. As U. Utah Phillips (RIP) useta say, "If voting could change anything, it would be illegal."

I agree, Obama is a fool

I agree, Obama is a fool when it comes to dealing with the Republicans and CONDems. He always does exactly what they want him to do. They got exactly what they wanted this year. They dragged out the health insurance reform to take up practically the entire year, while whittling it down until it meant nothing. Now they went so far that it is actually worse than nothing. This means that the Democrats accomplished NOTHING good this entire year (except for the stimulus). It should be extremely easy for the Republicans to regain the majority in the 2010 elections. But Obama isn't worried. He likes them more than he likes liberals, who he disdains.

I'm tired of liars and

I'm tired of liars and traitors like Lieberman. And also tired of some of the jerks who write in to bad mouth Obama because he isn't liberal enough. You'd rather have McCain or Cheney or Palin running the country??
