Interview with Rep. Barbara Lee

by: William Rivers Pitt

Barbara Lee (D-California) remains stoutly determined to drag her Congressional colleagues, as well as the Bush administration, away from continuing to support the long list of foreign and domestic policy decisions that have damaged the Unites States at home and abroad. In this video, she sits with William Rivers Pitt to discuss several of these issues in detail.

In the British satirical

In the British satirical revue "Beyond the Fringe' one skit is of an Englishman going to America having the US politics explained to him "There is the Republican party which is the equivalent of our Conservative party and there is the Democratic party which is the equivalent of our Conservative party!" Watching the Democrats since 2006 really confirms that the USA is a one party state.

I simply don't understand

I simply don't understand Representative Lee's refusal to call loudly for impeachment. Notice that impeachment wasn't mentioned here at all. Barbara Lee has rolled over for Nancy Pelosi's "impeachment is off the table edict." The more one pays attention to Congress, the more one (me, at least -- and every other activist I've talked to) comes to the conclusion that our elected officials are like a high school clique, where what matters most to the members is that she or he not lose their spot in the clique. Challenge the leadeship (Pelosi) and you're out. The one EFFECTIVE way to deal with the long list of Bush-presidency-created problems that are mentioned ithis interview is to impeach him. Anything else is really hot air -- hasn't this been decisively proven during the past eight years? Representative Lee calls for 'street heat.' Impeachment activists in her own district, including me, have organized two large impeachment events and invited Representative Lee to attend or to send a member of her staff. The silence from her office was deafening. No one came. Talk about demoralizing!

This is a wonderful

This is a wonderful opportunity to bring news from political insiders in Washington to the people on the ground. Unfortunately, there is nothing new here. Congresswoman Lee, one of the staunchest progressive activists, is nonetheless unwilling to challenge her Democratic leadership, which has capitulated on funding the war, on refusing to raise impeachment, on domestic spying, and on and on. These failures have destroyed public trust in the Democratic Party, just as her candidate Obama is doing, even as we speak. Instead of softball interviews, Pitt should come better prepared with specific questions to challenge even our allies.
